How to Prep for a Spray Tan: Your Glow-Up Starts Before You Arrive
Let’s talk about the golden rule of spray tanning: a flawless glow starts with the right prep. Whether it’s your first tan or your 50th, following a few key steps before your appointment can seriously level up your results. At Slater Beauty Studio, we’re all about giving you that perfect, even bronze—and it starts before you even walk through the door.
Why Spray Tan Prep Matters
Spray tan solutions interact with the outer layer of your skin, so if there’s leftover product, dry patches, or uneven texture, your tan might not develop evenly. Prepping properly means no streaks, no patchiness, and a glow that actually lasts.
24–48 Hours Before Your Appointment
Exfoliate like you mean it: Gently scrub away dead skin using a mitt or scrub. Focus on rough areas like elbows, knees, ankles, and hands. This helps the tan absorb evenly.
Hair removal? Now’s the time: Wax or shave at least 24 hours before your spray tan so your pores have time to close.
Skip the heavy lotions: Moisturizing is great, but not right before your tan. Product build-up can block the solution from developing properly.
Day of Your Appointment
Come with clean, bare skin: No deodorant, perfumes, makeup, or lotion. These can act as a barrier and interfere with the colour.
Wear dark, loose clothing: Tight clothes can rub against the tan and cause streaks. Think oversized sweats and a dark T-shirt.
Tie up your hair and leave the jewelry at home for a fuss-free experience.
Aftercare = Long-Lasting Results
We’ll walk you through full aftercare at your appointment, but here’s the quick version:
Wait the recommended time before rinsing (usually 2–12 hours, depending on your solution).
Use a gentle, spray tan-safe body wash.
Moisturize daily with a fragrance-free lotion to lock in your glow.
Book Smart
Planning a vacation, wedding, or big event? Time your tan right!
For vacations: Book the day before flying out.
For weddings/events: Tan 1–3 days prior for the best colour.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
